It’s only fitting that a potential 13-game win streak is on the line when the Washington Capitals host the Atlanta Thrashers at Verizon Center Friday night.
Is that 13 going to be just another record setting number or could Atlanta sneak in, after trading the best player in franchise history yesterday, and make it unlucky?
The Caps played an entertaining game last night in New York and turned right around to have Atlanta over for some hockey this evening. They have already beat the Thrashers 3-times in Atlanta this season, most recently an 8-1 whipping on January 9th.
Between an Ilya Kovalchuk-less team coming in to play, the potential distraction of a massive snowstorm and then a national NBC game of the week on Sunday against the rival Pittsburgh Penguins, this game screams of a trap.
In the end I’ll expect Coach Bruce Boudreau and his maturing team to be ready and thinking the same thing, but be careful of a team that now has a chip on its shoulder and is not in the shadow of one superstar player. This might be a night for a couple guys to wrap the knuckles in foil and make the massage reservations early for Saturday.
