At 19:25 of the 1st period, Russia took a 3-0 lead on Latvia as Alexander Ovechkin buried a feed from Alexander Semin.

We are at the end of the opening period of play and the Caps have made their mark early. Former Capitals forward Sergei Federov assisted on the first two Russian goals, but it was the third that was all Washington.

Semin made a surgeon-like steal, lifting the Latvian player’s stick and centering to Ovechkin, who buried a hybrid wrist shot/one-timer just before the break in action.

Ovechkin and Semin celebrate on Russian bench

Here is video bringing to life the still shot on the left. The same “handshake” the duo does when playing for the Capitals.

I will have serious issues if/when the US faces Russia. I will cheer for the USA but can’t honestly cheer against Ovi and Semin. We’ll cross that bridge if we reach it.

Nice job by the USA today, winning 3-1 over the Swiss. I’ve read some negative reactions to the US showing, but a win is a win and each game will help this young squad gel. Sabres goalie Ryan Miller only giving up one goal by the US squad helps.

Can the US ride a hot goalie to the gold? It’s early, but we will see.
