A pair of Eric’s netted the goals, but goalie Jose Theodore is the reason to celebrate the Washington Capitals 2-0 victory over the New York Rangers.
Theodore excelled in net this evening, forward Eric Fehr scored on the power play in the 1st period and newcomer Eric Belanger scored his first goal as a Capital, after being acquired at the trade deadline from Minnesota.
The 30 save effort was Theodore’s first shutout of the season as well as his first career blanking of the Rangers.
I’m often critical of Theodore because in many situations like this he’ll play great for stretches and then all of the sudden let in a soft goal. His concentration and execution tonight were flawless, even when he was hung out to dry a few times by bad turnovers in the Capitals zone. New York’s forecheck was tenacious but there is still no excuse for passing it directly to a wide open Ranger in front of the net in a clearing attempt.
The Capitals won their franchise record 13th straight home game even though Alex Ovechkin went his sixth game in a row without a goal. I’ll take the win over an Ovi goal any day of the week and I have no concerns at this point. Save it for the playoffs if you have to #8.
Congrats Capitals and great job Jose. You’re putting a solid season together in net and here’s to it lasting throughout the playoffs.
