The Washington Capitals’ week keeps getting busier and better.

First rookie camp evolves to full fledged training camp, then some significant roster activity leading into the preseason opener at Columbus.

This evening the on-ice side of the Caps dispatched the Blue Jackets by the score of 6-2.

No television for this one, but washingtoncaps.com was streaming audio from Ohio.

Matt Hendricks netted a hat trick and Tomas Fleischmann had 2 goals and an assist for the visitors. Cody Eakin scored the other Capitals goal as Alex Semin dished 3 assists and Marcus Johannsson notched 2 apples of his own.

Off ice, earlier in the week, General Manager George McPhee continued to play the salary stock market to manage the cap for the current year as well as the future.

He worked to get veteran defenseman Tom Poti and young goaltender Michal Neuvirth signed to a pair of respective 2-year extensions. The right guys at the right price.

I’ll absolutely take this as a successful opening week of the NHL season.
